OUR MISSION
Martial Medicine is an interdisciplinary project investigating the intersections of culture, health, and ritual through the lens of global martial arts.
Drawing from the traditions of Taekwondo in Korea, Capoeira in Brazil, Muay Thai in Thailand, and Kalaripayattu in India, the project examines how these arts function as rites of passage—bridging physical discipline to social vitality, mental balance, and spiritual growth.
We explore how martial arts cultivate healing—not just through physical conditioning, but through the embodied ethics of respect, endurance, and connection.

FRAMEWORK
Where Western medicine often separates mind and body, martial traditions integrate them through ritualized movement, breath, and intention. The bow before a sparring match, the rhythm of the roda, or the meditation before a strike—all serve as cultural prescriptions for balance and resilience.
By applying medical anthropology, we uncover how martial arts offer holistic care:
Healing the body through movement and breath
Healing the mind through discipline and mindfulness
Healing the community through shared ritual and story
Martial arts, in this sense, are forms of embodied medicine—rituals of renewal that preserve both cultural heritage and human wellbeing.
